Chapter Ten

A few weeks had passed since Thomas had opened up about his reservations, and they had been the best weeks of Daniel’s life by far. Things would have been near to perfect if he could have found a job. He had savings, but after paying for his room at the guest house and buying essentials like food, he was eating into his reserves at an alarming pace.

Thomas’ solution was to ask Daniel to move into the palace with him. It was a crazy idea and Daniel had refused, much to Thomas’ chagrin. Daniel liked how their relationship had been progressing and he liked the change to Thomas’ behavior and attitude, but they were still getting to know each other. It was too soon to commit to something that serious. Besides, Daniel liked his independence. He wanted to pay his own way in life. He hated the idea of being a kept man. It didn’t matter that Thomas had the means and inclination to support him. He had to concede, however, that if he didn’t land a job soon, he was either going to have to take Thomas up on his offer or relocate, and he didn’t want to think about that option, because it would mean leaving Thomas behind.

Since he’d opened up, Thomas had been a different man. There had been times when he’d appeared overwhelmed, but Daniel understood his anxiety. He’d been patient because he knew Thomas was worth it. He knew that they were a good match, but Daniel wasn’t kidding himself. Thomas had been alone for two hundred years. It would take time for him to adjust to being in a relationship.

“Thinking’s overrated,” Connor said, cutting a sideways glance at Daniel from his position behind the steering wheel. He signaled right then deftly maneuvered the car down another street that took them closer to Kenny’s Juke Joint.

Daniel chuckled. “That so?”

“If you’re worried about Thomas, there’s no need to be. He knows what he’s doing and he’s good at it. He’s been hunting and killing Drones for centuries. ‘Sides, his shift’s nearly over. He’ll be meeting us in Kenny’s in under an hour.”

Daniel frowned. “Thanks for the reminder. I was trying not to think about him out there risking his life.”

Connor’s eyes crinkled and his lips quirked. “Damn. So what were you thinking about?”

Daniel had been hanging out with Thomas at the palace until he’d left to patrol with his men. Connor had taken the night off so that he and Daniel could get to know each another. It had been a nice gesture and one Daniel had appreciated, because other than Thomas, he didn’t know anyone in town. He was relieved that they’d gotten along. He heaved a sigh then told Connor about the job situation and his worries that he might have to leave town to find something suitable.

Connor chewed on his bottom lip, his brow creasing. “You mind what you do?”

“Right now? Not at all. Why?”

“Shit,” Connor muttered. “Thomas is gonna skin me alive for telling you this.
